I have mentioned here and there that I don’t like using the weight scale as a tool to measure my fitness progress. I wanted to take some time to explain why I am not in the scale fan club so let’s jump right in!

  1. It can really put a hamper on your progress. If you rely too much on what the scale says or rely only on what the number on the scale is then you may get a serious case of the blues when the number goes up. That number will go up and down and all around due to multiple factors…water retention, building muscle, etc. Don’t let THAT number be the reason you quit your journey to being a healthier you.
  1. It’s not always the most accurate. Our basic scales do not take into account the muscle you build. We need to keep in mind that a little increase in the scale could be due to building a little muscle. Remember friends, muscle does weigh more than fat so before getting discouraged by the scale look in the mirror.
  1. It’s important to focus on how you feel not the number on the scale. Is your favorite pair of jeans fitting better? Do you feel like your best self? It’s also about being able to take those stairs up to the third floor without feeling completely out of breath. Sometimes when we focus too much on that number on the scale we forget about listening to our body. We forget about seeing the actual progress we are making because we can’t see beyond the number.
  1. We’re not focusing on the right numbers. Instead of focusing on the pounds let’s look at the progress that’s happening with your cholesterol. Has exercising helped lower your blood pressure? Is that walk that you’ve been taking helping control your blood sugar? To me those are good numbers that show you’re making progress with your fitness and health!

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t weigh yourself ever, but I don’t think it should be the sole focus of your fitness journey. I think the goal shouldn’t be a number on the scale, but being the happiest, healthiest you that you can be.
