What we’ve been eating…

We have been eating our colors and more whole foods…at least during the week 😁

I wanted to share with you some of our yummy weekday meals starting with this lunch. We used the sweet kale salad kit and baked up some frozen air fryer chicken tenders.

These tenders were from Tyson and they were crispy and delicious. I have to add though that you need some kind of sauce to dip it in because they do run on the dryer side.

I mentioned in my last post the breakfast tacos I have been making with the Siete tortillas.

I roasted up some potatoes for the week to create a quick and delicious breakfast.

The addition of some yummy pickled veggies amped up the flavor!

Watermelon has been a go to snack recently. We get one good watermelon and we are on a roll with finding all the sweet, juicy ones.

For dinner one night we made a stir fry with yuba noodles. Yuba noodles are made from tofu and add a chewy texture and a bit of protein.

We did a combo of shrimp, broccoli, onion and mushroom. It was tasty and filling!

The protein pancakes from Kodiak Cakes and cherries have been another go to breakfast. I love cherries and am so happy it’s cherry season 🙂

These are our eats as of late! What have you been munching on??

Tempeh everyday

My usual meals at home are vegetarian, but we’ve been trying our hand at making some new things and that has meant eating a little more meat.

I wanted to change that up so picked up some tempeh to try out.

I (wrongly) assumed that it would be like cooking up tofu. It was a little more prep then that.

You have to boil or steam the tempeh to rid it of a sour/bitter taste, marinade it, and then bake or cook it stove top.

My favorite thing to do has been to make sandwiches or BLT toast. Hubby has loved making wraps with them!

I picked up a carton of heirloom tomatoes to use for our BLTs. The tomatoes were so yummy. I cut it up and had the rest it on the side-they were so juicy!

Tempeh does take a little extra time to prep, but now is a good time to experiment with ingredients.

The time we cooked

Hi friends! Since this is a food blog and the show must go on I have a food post for you today.

We have been trying to cook at home more for a few reasons. For one, social distancing, two, dine in is closed and three, it’s entertainment and we gotta eat!

That list obviously doesn’t include things like the food is more nutrient dense and being able to get as many colorful fruits and veggies for our immune health but that’s a given, yeah?

I wanted to share three things we have made recently. One of those things was the “fried rice” dish I shared a couple of posts ago.

We put so many veggies in here-broccoli, kale, bell peppers, and mushrooms. It was a yummy dish!

One day for lunch we baked up chicken legs. I learned a fun tip from Bon Appetit. If you salt the legs the night before, you will get some juicy and flavorful chicken.

Juicy and flavorful they were. We seasoned 2 with Sazon, 2 with our combo of seasoning and 1 with the TJs elote seasoning.

The elote and our combo was out favorite! Our combo was super simple-garlic and onion powder and some dry dill.

Because we seasoned with salt the night before it didn’t need additional salt. Gosh was it yummy!

If you have been reading long enough, you guys know how much we love burgers so that was on the dinner menu.

We made some fries from scratch and even though some were burnt, we really enjoyed them. These are great when you have some extra time to soak and dry the potatoes. I loved that they were baked and still turned out super crispy!

Sonoratown and Somisomi

Remember that post I shared with you guys about Worth It? That show on YouTube that goes to different restaurants to try a food at three different price points?

Well, they tried tacos and since then Sonoratown has been on our mind. They kept talking about how amazing the flour tortillas were and I just knew me+Sonoratown=match made in heaven.

When we arrived there was a line and initially it didn’t seem to be moving but we managed to get through the line and order all in about 30 minutes.

After that wait we basically ordered one of everything on the menu.

We got two tacos-a chicken and beef, a shredded beef chivichanga (mini burrito), a chicken burrito, and a tostada.

They gave us salsa to go with it all and we both loved the red. It was fresh and bright with a good bit of spice.

Out of the food I loved everything. The tostada was my favorite along with the tacos and chivichanga. The burrito was good and ended up being the hubby’s favorite.

I am oh so happy we got to try this spot out!

Afterwards we needed something sweet so we paid the meter and headed to Little Tokyo to find some dessert.

Somisomi met all our requirements so we stopped in and hubs got the milk softserve and I got matcha. Normally we get them in the taiyaki cones but this time we switched it up a bit.

We ordered the softserve in cups and got the taiyaki on the side filled with nutella.

We had a few bites of our softserve before the piping hot taiyaki came out. Oh.em.gee. My life has been changed. This is definitely the way to do it!

The hot, chewy taiyaki dipped into the cold, cresmy softserve is the best mixing of temps and textures 🤤

It was a pretty fantastic way to spend the day!

Green Chef

I feel like we have tried out quite a few of the meal subscription boxes out there but had missed Green Chef somehow.

I thought it would be fun to switch things up one week and ordered Green Chef for a week I would be home a majority of the days.

The thing to note is that we looked through all their options and the only section we found recipes that looked interesting was the keto section.

Neither of us are keto but we do eat “cleaner” during the week. Lots of veggies, fruits and some kind of protein. We were excited to make and taste our recipes!

The box arrived and honestly I feel like all the stuff is packaged pretty similar among all the food subscription boxes.

The first meal we made was the salmon.

It came with a side of wilted kale and roasted beets and red bell pep. The piccata sauce on top was fresh and vinegary. We made this dish for lunch one day and I loved it so much, but it was not very filling.

I am saying this as a human who eats small portions because of stomach space, but I still needed to snack quite a bit after this meal.

The chicken dish I made for dinner. It was spiced with dukkah seasoning and had a side of roasted butternut squash, greens and served on a bed of cauliflower rice.

I did this one myself and had no issues bringing the meal together pretty quickly with myself in the kitchen. The only difficulty was peeling the butternut squash.

Again, the dish was flavorful and savory and I really enjoyed it. The only issue was satiety…you will see this as the running theme 😞

The third and last dish was a shrimp and “grits.” The grits were made from cauliflower rice and the shrimp was seasoned with blackening seasoning.

I had never had grits so I can’t vouch for how similar this was to grits, but it was creamy and cheesy from the cheddar cheese and cream cheese. I liked the bites of bell pepper in there too.

It definitely was not a veggie heavy dish so we added roasted Brussels from earlier in the week to round out the meal.

B made this dish while I showered and basically had it halfway done. It seemed to take no time at all which was great since we were both in need of some food!

All the recipes were easy to follow and no trouble making if you had 40-45 minutes (maybe even less). It was easy to do whether you had one or two people in the kitchen.

It was a smooth transition to have someone pick up where you left off or have someone doing another step without a lot of confusion.

A couple of not so great things that are highlighted in my mind are that I never felt full after these meals and feeling locked into making the meal.

Being locked in I think is something i felt with all the boxes. Not that they weren’t easy to cancel, but once the box arrived we had to make them during a certain time.

I didn’t want anything to go bad and with our work schedules it wasn’t always plausible to put it off and make it another night.

I’m sure that at some point we will revisit a box or try another, but for now I think we will continue to throw stuff together ourselves 😊

Pizza and friends

Our friends that had moved out of state came to visit and we had to see them! They are the most wonderful people and they have the sweetest kiddos.

We had been to the Luggage Room in Pasadena with them before and hadn’t been back since then so we decided it was time for a visit!

After chatting for a bit the husbands went to order and oh man did we order!

They ordered a couple of pizzas and a salad. We ordered a chopped salad, a burrata pizza, and some deviled eggs.

You guys, I love a good chopped salad. Nothing makes me happier than being able to shovel salad in my mouth without the interruption of oddly shaped leaves being half in and half out of my mouth. This salad was right up my ally!

The deviled eggs were yummy. There was either mustard or horseradish or something mixed in to give it a bit of a kick. We both really like deviled eggs, but it’s not something we commonly see on a menu. I think we were surprised and intrigued by the fact it was at a pizza place.

The pizza was a Neapolitan style and you know how much I LOVE a good Neapolitan pizza.

The burrata was gooey and soft, the sauce added a really great brightness to contrast the rich cheese. I love that they just chop up a bunch of basil to top off their pizzas. It adds a nice herby freshness.

After eating, talking, and more eating and talking we had to go our separate ways. We had plans to go to Alcove and were sad they couldn’t join us, but so happy to have seen them.

Alcove had a line to order food but since we just wanted a slice of cake we were able to skip the line. We eye drooled over all the cakes on display but settled on an oldie but a goodie-the birthday cake 😋

Okay so that’s where we had planned on our food adventure ending, but B mentioned that Donut Man was on the way home.

Donut Man is kinda famous in SoCal for their glazed donut filled with strawberries. There is usually a line and we had been once before. Sadly the other donut they are known for is a tiger tail but they ran out before we ordered the last time.

We were determined to get a tiger tail this time. And we did…along with a couple of other donuts…

The tiger tail was warm and I could feel it through the box. That led us to trying that and all the donuts in the car 😬

Totally worth it because very few things are as wonderful as a warm, yeasty donut. This was a good combination of melt in your mouth and having a good chew. Donut Man does a great classic donut!

We drove back home sugared up and tummies full!

Random eats and a fruit haul

I really enjoy doing a recap of our meals because it takes me back to those days and gives me all the mems.

Like this turkey and hummus pita with shrettuce and pickles. I remember being so hungry and eating quite a few carrots while making this.

We visited Mendocino for lunch one day and shared a couple of sandwiches with these amazing spicy chips.

My favorite thing at Denny’s used to be the Fit Fare Sizzlin’ Egg Skillet, but it is now this veggie omelet. I got it without cheese and a side of steamed brocc.

The hashbrowns that it came with were so crispy and went perfectly with the soft eggs. Side of turkey bacon…all of the proteins!

One particular night we had a little bit of leftover ground beef so we made burgers and had chips on the side.

I was super proud of us this night because we used up our last two potato buns and leftover shrettuce. It is so satisfying to use things up!

I don’t know if it could be considered a fruit “haul” but we have been eating a lot of fruit lately.

It started from a walk to our Farmer’s Market where we got three pints of strawberries and some mandarins.

I don’t think it’s berry season, but these were the most yummy strawberries. The mandarins were juicy and sweet. Omg I could have just eaten pints and pints of those strawberries!

We visited Sprout’s and found these golden kiwis. I had been wanting to try them and I am so glad we did! These kiwis were so sweet and as promised golden on the inside. Love, love, love!

Mangoes were another fruit that I was certain would not be good right now, but ended up being delectable. It was so sweet and reminded me why I don’t need any other dessert when I have a good mango.

Do you guys feel this way about fruit? If the fruit is good enough and sweet enough I don’t need anything else to curb my sweet tooth.

Oh the food we will eat…Porto’s

For hubby’s birthday one of his co-workers had very sweetly gifted him a gift card to Porto’s. Now, we love Porto’s and would have gone anyway, but having the gift card was definitely an added incentive 🙂

Porto’s is this amazing Cuban bakery that has delicious baked goods (duh), coffees/teas/beverages, and incredible food. The lines are always long, but go pretty quickly. Once you get to the front of the line you get called by an available person where you order all the baked goods your heart desires. You do have to be a bit loud because people all around you are ordering too.

Once you order your person tells you to wait right there while they run and grab all your treats. They then have you go to the cashier and order any other drinks or food you’d like and pay. After ordering our treats this time we decided to order food. We ordered and got a tracker so they could bring us the food to our table.

It’s quite the experience to say the least!

Now for what we got! We were hungry so we ordered the grilled citrus chicken breast with salsa verde. We wanted a sandwich as well and got the Porto’s Torta with grilled steak.

The chicken dish came with rice, black beans, and plantains. Every part of this dish was so good-my highlights were the chicken and plantain. The chicken was savory and the salsa verde added a good acidity. The plantains I saved for last because they were sweet and caramelized and the perfect little ending (except we also had cookies…more on that later).

The sandwich had guac, black bean spread, cotija cheese, lettuce and tomato. I loved that the grilled steak was chopped up so it was easy to bite through. It drives me a bit bonkers when there are grilled pieces of steak and when you bite into your sandwich that whole piece of steak comes out. The sandwich came with a side of plantain chips-y’all know I love my plantain chips!

On to the sweeter side of things…I had gone there with the intention of getting these soft, shortbread type cookies filled with dulce de leche. They are called besitos and they are one of the best things on the planet. We each had one after our meal and lordyyy…one of the best meals ever!

Other than the besitos we had gotten a few things to have throughout the next few days. The caramel flan which is absolutely delicious and not to sweet. If it’s your first time here I would recommend the individual size tres leches, the caramel flan, guava and cheese pastry (we didn’t get this time) and besitos.

I wanted to try the creme brulee this time but it ended up being a bit of a fail. The custard was a bit to runny and there wasn’t that satisfying crispy top. I wasn’t too devastated by this because they have way too many other delicious treats.

We also got the chocolate twist which was so flaky and mildly sweet with chocolate swirled throughout the pastry. I really liked the cinnamon roll, it had a super vanilla smell and flavor. We warmed it up and it was sweet and gooey!

The brownie was dense but cakey at the same time. It was not my favorite chocolatey treat, but the hubs really liked it. I think if you like dark chocolate then you would definitely enjoy this!

Now the piece de resistance was this tres leches cake roll. To be honest it wasn’t much of a cake roll, but I didn’t mind that one bit. Tres leches cakes are one of my favorite cakes and I can never turn one down. The frosting was thick and fluffy at the same time but not at all sweet. I like that they left the sweetness up to the milky cake. It was a great balance.

I was telling B that the only thing to make this even better would have been some fruit! I mentioned before you should try the individual tres leches, but after you’ve done that I highly recommend the tres leches “cake roll.”

I’ve had the opportunity to try their large sheet cake of tres leches with fruit and it is incredible and remains on my list of favorite cakes of all time, but there’s only 2 of us and we don’t need that large of a cake no matter how much my eyes and stomach say otherwise.

Saturday Lunch

You know how you sometimes go to a place, love it, and never really get a chance to go back? Well, you know how when you go back and you fall in love all over again? Yeah that happened to me recently…

This particular Saturday we needed to be in LA for a friend’s birthday so we decided to just make a whole day of it. We worked out, got ready, and headed out to Pasadena to eat at Fiore Market Cafe.

We were really worried that they were going to be out of bread (fresh baked in house) because we have had that happen before, but lucky for us bread was a plenty!

We ordered 2 sandwiches to split-the tempeh bacon sandwich and the short rib sandwich.

The short rib had an Asian slaw, pickles and chipotle mayo. It was super simple, but so yummy. The beef was shredded and savory while the slaw and pickles added acidity and freshness. If you’re a first timer here I would highly recommend this!

The tempeh bacon sandwich was their take on a vegan BLTA. It had tomato, lettuce, avocado, and veganaise. This was the hubby’s favorite out of the 2 which surprised us both. The tempeh had a bit of sweetness which I think he enjoyed.

Both of these came on their freshly baked bread. You guys this bread is soft, fluffy white bread with this crusty outside. If I weren’t starving and ready to inhale anything put in front of me I would have cried at the beauty of this bread.

We obviously had to get some chips on the side and the jalapeno cheddar kettle chips reminded me of queso? B did not agree, but I kept eating and exclaiming how much it tasted like queso! The sandwiches came with a simple side salad dressed with a vinegary dressing of sorts-honestly it was really good. I love a good side salad!

After lunch we walked around the area and enjoyed the trees, houses, and stores until we came across Berry Opera. It was a little French bakery and I needed something sweet so I decided that we should share one of their mini cream puffs. B decided on the pistachio-this puff was nothing we expected. The puff itself was more bready than pastry and the cream was thick and butter creamy. We both enjoyed it and our sweet tooth was satiated!

Some stuff I forgot to mention…

Before Christmas and our trips we were trying to not waste food so we were using up what we had left and we chose to eat out after that so we had some really yummy food that I never had a chance to share with you guys. Besides that B took a lot of these pics and they were so good I couldn’t help but share!

Starting off on a sweet note we had Baked for dessert one night…I’m not sure how good it is that we live so close to one. It’s seriously so freakin’ good. I really want one right now!

Speaking of Baked, you know what else is good from there? Their cheesecakes. This one in particular is the yema creme brulee one and it was one of the best cheesecake/dessert items I have ever had. Since then we’ve tried the ube and it’s also incredible, but I would say go for the yema first!

I’ve known about Harry and David pears and decided to try them out with the husband when we spotted them at our Trader Joe’s. I’m not sure if I’m missing something, but they tasted like a good ol’ fashioned pear?! Nothing spectacular…

We had some Thai food-soup and pad thai for the win. It was a cold day and this was some Thai comfort food at it’s best.

To say I had a lot of turkey sandwiches would be an understatement. For whatever reason sandwiches and chips were just really hitting the spot at the time and why stop when you have a good thing going?

We recently discovered Mr. Dumpling and have been back a couple more times (that’s how good it is!). We got the fish and celery dumplings as well as the beef and green onion. We got the spicy beef soup which was fantastic as always…this sounds pretty delectable right now.

Last but not least we have the bagel sandwiches from 42nd Street Bagel Cafe. Keep the sandwiches and chips coming! We got an everything bagel with egg and cheese as well as their pastrami sandwich on an everything. I loved both, but the pastrami sandwich won out by a tinyyy bit here. Honestly, their bagels by themselves are so yummy! I am so happy to have found this bagel place!
